BOOK REVIEW
The Wizard of Work: Richard Gaither with John Baker
Ten Speed Press (1995); 88 pages
Most of you had the pleasure of meeting our keynote speaker,
Dick Gaither, during our fall retreat.
You’ll remember his enthusiastic, straightforward & often humorous
approach to encourage all of us to think a little differently about our role as
career search professionals. This
down-to-earth approach is pervasive in this “must have” reference publication
for “people who’d rather be working than reading a book.”
In only 88 pages, Dick provides job seekers with easy-to-use
exercises and information designed to prepare completely for their search. Assessing & defining marketable skills
and responding to tough interview questions are only two of the areas the book
tackles with common sense. There are
plenty of “juicy” lists included in the book, too, like the “Personality Trait
Checklist” and “Why an Employer Would Be Happy to Hire Me.”
Realistic expectations of hiring managers and job seekers
are a common thread throughout the book.
There’s not much room for confusion for any of our clients who are
serious about their career search—I would highly recommend this for both career
search professionals and career seekers.
